It is often called ‘Devbhoomi’ as it has many ancient temples and ashrams. Apart from being a major religious hub, it is also a paradise for nature lovers, trekkers, and adventure seekers.
This travel guide will take you through every small detail about Uttarkashi, its historical significance, must-visit places, and travel tips.
History of Uttarkashi
Uttarkashi, often called the ‘Kashi of the North’, holds a deep spiritual and historical significance. The town has been a center of devotion, meditation, and knowledge for centuries.
Ancient texts mention that sages like Rishi Jadbharat, Rishi Markandeya, and Sage Parashurama meditated in this sacred land. The town is closely linked to Kashi (Varanasi), as both lie on the banks of holy rivers—Varanasi on the Ganges and Uttarkashi on the Bhagirathi. It is believed that Lord Shiva resided here, which is why the Vishwanath Temple stands at its heart.
Historically, Uttarkashi was part of the Garhwal Kingdom, ruled by the Katyuri and Panwar dynasties. In the 16th century, King Sudharshan Shah promoted it as a major pilgrimage site. During British rule, the town remained untouched due to its remote location but thrived as a center for Hindu learning and astrology.
After independence, it became part of Uttar Pradesh and later Uttarakhand (2000). Today, Uttarkashi is a gateway to Gangotri and several Himalayan treks, attracting devotees and adventurers alike.
