In a significant move to enhance tourism, Uttarakhand is set to introduce a new cruise ship service on Tehri Lake, one of Asia’s largest man-made lakes. This initiative aims to attract more visitors and promote village tourism in the region.
Vijay Bisht, the cruise ship’s manager, described the project as an “unprecedented move” focused on boosting local tourism. He emphasized that the Tehri Dam, which creates the lake, is the highest dam in the world, offering vast potential for tourism activities. Bisht also highlighted plans to promote village tourism through this venture, aiming to benefit local communities and revitalize interest in the area following the dam’s construction.
The cruise ship, reportedly built at a cost of ₹8 crore, is designed to provide a luxurious experience at an altitude of 1,700 meters above sea level. It features 12 rooms, a restaurant, and other amenities to ensure a comfortable journey for tourists.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has also announced a 25% discount on stays at Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) hotels to promote winter tourism. He has directed officials to strengthen security arrangements for tourists during the winter season, ensure effective emergency management systems during adverse weather, and expedite road repair works.
The introduction of the cruise ship service is expected to provide tourists with a unique way to experience the natural beauty of Tehri Lake and its surroundings. By promoting village tourism, the initiative aims to offer visitors an authentic cultural experience while providing economic benefits to local communities.
With these developments, Uttarakhand is positioning itself as a more appealing destination for travelers, combining its natural beauty with new experiences like cruising on Tehri Lake.
